Modus Operandi
Growth cycles have been led by founders who thought outside the box, selectively trashing countless conventions of their industry and pushed ahead ad infinitum. New markets rarely arrive in the form an existing industry expects. They begin at the edge, built by those willing to look misplaced until the rest of the market moves alongside them. By the time their progress appears sensible to the majority, most value has already been captured.
More than ever, angels and venture in the valley and elsewhere pride themselves through socials to support builders of all backgrounds. Launching a prototype, getting feedback, submitting to accelerators and talking to anyone in the industry is as easy as ever.
Yet, ventures in 2026 fund the same narrow band of visions, founder backgrounds and erroneous product outlooks. There's nothing visionary in thinking like everyone else. Then why do we accept this behavior from venture capital?
We need to relearn to embrace the misfits. Those uninterested in attention, free of ideology, those who work at a pace they feel is right.
Complacency kills. We prefer great ideas.
